Fabulous quote from Jill Scott MBE on I'm a Celebrity this weekend.

"Being involved in sport, it's not about being involved at an elite level; it's about learning how to win and how to lose, and helping others.. She won because she lived out these values.

After turning out for my local Vets side Birstall RFC last week, I was asked at short notice this week to 'save' a local game between Quorn and Market Harborough as there was no referee available.

After benefitting from 40 years of being part of the #Rugby family and traveling the world it was an obvious choice. Although I have no experience as a Referee like most players I have 'reffed' every game I have played in! stepping in on Saturday to make sure 35 players had a game was nerve wracking and yet enjoyable at the same time. I certainly appreciate all those referees who have put up with my antics over the years on the pitch!

For me the most important aspect of sport has always been grassroots enjoyment and the taking part. I have never been that good. But I have taken part. We need to create far more enjoyment and fun in sport. There needs to be plenty of space for people like me who aren't all that good but still want to run out!

I have a big admission. This year I have probably only watched a few hours of live professional sport - Leicester Tigers , Sarah Hunter Women Rugby side and some of the Autumn Internationals (on Prime). I didn't see any of the Euros, Commonwealth Games or other major sports events in the UK. I know I am lucky that I have "been there and seen it", but I really have deliberately put my time and effort into grassroots participation and sport for development projects that really do change people's lives. There was no sudden moment when I stopped but gradually, I have drifted away from my love for major spectator sporting events.

I know every sport is struggling with returning to pre-covid levels of volunteering. I am not a model volunteer. I only do a bit. But if you don't want to fully commit, I am sure every sport would welcome you back to do what you can to help others enjoy their sport.

Despite the experience I am not yet ready to commit to refereeing every week. Those who get even more respect from me now. But if we learned how to re-build community through our sports clubs and volunteering it would bring a great deal to rebuilding our nation.
