Sport has the power to bring people together, build stronger communities, support individual development and positively change lives. The Sport for Development Coalition (SFDC) was born out of a shared belief in sport’s potential to play a greater role in addressing social issues across the UK.
The SFDC is a collective movement of organisations (and networks) that collaborate to be greater than the sum of its parts. Currently consisting of 70 organisations and funded via confirmed grant funding from Sport England and Comic Relief for four years with additional possible funding from Laureus.
SFDC Chair Andy Reed OBE said: “We are extremely grateful to our funding partners for this new investment. The SFDC’s aim now will be to significantly grow the network and the momentum of this Movement, and demonstrate on a national scale how the power of sport can improve people’s lives and build stronger communities.”
Many fundraising events in the UK have been postponed or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Whilst we are all hopeful many of these events will go ahead at a later date, many charities across the UK have been left struggling to maintain their services.
These charities need our support now more than ever. From those supporting children to the elderly, as well as those providing vital palliative care, mental health support, housing, food supplies and more. It’s never been more important to come together and show how much we care.
The Sport for Development Coalition (SFDC) is encouraging organisations to 'sign up and join the Movement' after publishing its first Charter.
The SFDC is a growing group of 70 organisations across the UK who believe in the power of sport and physical activity to act as effective tools for intervention when generating positive social outcomes.
This includes charities, networks, funders and governing bodies using sport to tackle issues ranging from crime and unemployment to poverty and inequality. The SFDC is supported and funded by Comic Relief, Sport England and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
The Charter, which can be viewed here, contains seven guiding principles to follow for organisations that want to join the SFDC. This includes being able to actively demonstrate, and advocate for the intentional use of sport and/or physical activity to generate positive social outcomes, and helping to develop and use a common language and understanding of sport for development

Following the early end of the rugby season in England as a result of COVID-19, The Rugby Football Union has announced the final league positions.
Proposals from the RFU governance committee to conclude the season for those leagues at both professional and community level were yesterday ratified by the RFU Council.
It was agreed that final standings for the Greene King IPA Championship and men’s and women’s community game would be calculated on a best playing record formula maintaining promotion and relegation for those leagues.

Sport England have announced a £195m package of support to the sport and physical activity sector today.
We’re making up to £195 million of funding available to help the sport and physical activity sector through the ongoing coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis.
The Sports for Development sector is impacted during the Coronavirus like so many others. As Chair of the Coalition of Partners our network of support and guidance is needed now more than ever.
