Thanks to Henham Strategy and Nick King I’m looking forward to a roundtable today looking at the potential for sports tech to be a real economic driver for the UK. We in Leicester and Leicestershire Business and Skills Partnership have a role to play in this economic opportunity.

I have always had a fascination for tech - verging on being very nerdy. I have always been an early adopter and track my health and wellbeing with new gadgets that come onto the market! Dave Wright Jay Worthy Myzone®

The opportunity is bigger than innovation alone. If we want sports tech to grow, we need to think about scale-up, clusters, research translation, and the policy conditions that help businesses stay and grow here.

Universities like Loughborough University show the value of strong anchor institutions. Organisations like Sport:80 show how practical technology can solve real problems for NGBs.

And I have lessons from businesses that did not scale — despite early optimism — and are just as important as the success stories.

The next phase for the UK is not more hype. It is stronger pathways from idea to adoption, and from adoption to growth.

I wil see if my ideas and thoughts are the same by the end of the day? That’s why I go into these things with an open mind to learn - even at my age!
